Both are excellent products. JB weld has recently (also Marine grade) come up with a putty stick much like that offered by Marine Tex. I like the putty sticks better than the 2part paste and hardener as is often too soft and difficult to place.

Marine – Tex is a creamy paste consistency that can be applied on vertical or horizontal surfaces, easily fills gaps, and can be shaped to rebuild damaged components. Is Marine Tex any good?
I have done a lot of repairs on sailboats. The marine tex is good stuff and will work. Gel coat is more work, but is easier to get a really smooth surface with almost no sanding(at least for me). If you use gel coat you need to get some PVA also.

With a trowel, apply Marine – Tex to the surface and work into all voids and depressions. To minimize sanding, remove excess epoxy with trowel before it cures. Use water to smooth to the desired shape. Let cure for the full amount of time.

Does 5200 bond to aluminum?
5200 will not ” bond ” to either starboard or aluminum. It may ” stick” to aluminum but will not hold starboard well at all. Your best bet is to have one or two small tabs welded to the transom and use these to screw or bolt on a piece of starboard for mounting.
Can you screw into marine Tex?
Marine Tex is thickened epoxy and usually is fine for filling screw holes.
Can you gelcoat over Marine Tex?
First: you can put gelcoat over any epoxy including Marine Tex. As noted above you need to rough it up really good. Second: To spray the gelcoat on, the best way I have found for small projects is to use a Preval sprayer (available through West Marine and others).

CURE TIME: 24 hours at a constant temperature of 72° F. Lower temperatures will create longer cure times. It is not recommended to apply the product in temperatures below 55° F. Before starting project, store Marine – Tex at 70° F for ease of mixing and application.
Is Marine Tex easy to sand?
When you apply the marine tex, fair it as best you can, and you can really minimize sanding. That stuff is very tough to sand, and is often harder than surrounding material (Gelcoat) meaning that if you aggressively sand it the marinetex will stand proud leaving the surrounding material low.
